At Greener Cleaners we often get asked if we’re a maid service. And quite frankly, the term ‘Tucson maid service’ gets searched more than ‘Tucson house cleaners’ and ‘house cleaners Tucson’ combined on the major search engines. Do you think people are actually looking for maids? Or do you think they’re looking for someone to clean or tidy up their home?

In any case, the term maid as it’s defined on Wikipedia points you to the definition of a domestic worker. Straight from Wikipedia, a domestic worker performs typical domestic chores such as cooking, ironing, washing, cleaning the house, buying foods and drinks, accompanying the female head of the household for grocery shopping, taking the family dog for a walk, and taking care of the children.

Here are a few kitchen ‘Green Tips’ for those of you who will be spending an entire week in the kitchen with Thanksgiving right around the corner:

Fill a bowl with cold water and wash fruit and vegetables this way, instead of letting water from a faucet run over them.

Make sure the kitchen faucet is in the “cold” position when turning it on for brief periods. You’ll waste significant energy turning on the hot water even before hot water starts to flow.

Buy organic foods. Organic farms use natural growing practices that promote sustainable agriculture and provide healthy alternatives to conventional crops grown with pesticides and genetically modified organisms. Ask your grocer’s produce manager to stock organic produce.

Shaklee Products

So yesterday I met with a really nice gal by the name of Patricia Morrison. She is a Shaklee Independent Distributor here in Tucson. I just had to tell you how excited I am to be working with her. I have not had too much experience with Shaklee products, with the exception of the Germ off Wipes (which are wonderful), but after meeting with her I think that I might just start using them exclusively….or at least more! While my Ecover products do a good job, I am really hoping that the Shaklee products will do a great job! It is true that ‘green’ products don’t work as good as traditional cleaning products (Windex, Clorox, etc…..) all the time. This is mostly because they lack the extra strength toxins that will not only kill bacteria but brain cells as well. Shaklee is said to work even better than all of them! This excites me beyond belief…..how lame am I? You know I’m starting to realize that I have no life, specially when the find of new cleaning products are the highlight of my day. I am just really stoked about this opportunity to work side by side with a company that has been around for over 50 years and is still going strong, if not stronger. Cut back on wrapping waste by placing gifts in reusable bags or baskets. If you prefer traditional wrapping paper, try to find a brand with recycled content and then reuse any large pieces to wrap presents again next year. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, Americans produce an extra two billion pounds of garbage per week, much of which is gift packaging. If 40 percent of U.S. households reduced their holiday paper consumption by just two sheets this year, the savings could gift wrap Manhattan island.

Use porcelain plates, silverware, and glasses instead of plastic and paper. Each year, forty billion plastic utensils are thrown into landfills across the country. Besides waste, you can save money, too. Using your own utensils, glasses, and flatware is free, whereas the cost of plastic plates, forks, knives, and cups for a total of fifty meals could add up to $100.

*When packing a child’s lunch consider using forks, knives, spoons, and cups from a second hand store. I’ve learned the hard way, one time too many times, not to pack the good stuff. This way if your child should lose or ruin any of those items, you are not out a good piece of silverware.
