Tucson Green Holiday lighting alternative - LED’s

Posted in: Green Gadgets

It’s becoming the time of year that children dream about for 13 months out of the year.  A time where a jolly old man works his way down chimney’s to leave gifts for those young children that have behaved.

christmas_lights For the fathers, it’s the time of year we search for and dig through boxes that have had 12 long months to hide.  In hopes of finding that tangled mess of holiday lights used every year for the past 5 years that we just threw in the box 12 months ago.  If you’re like me, you end up purchasing new lights because it’s quicker and easier than spending a weekend looking through your junk.  This year, give LED holiday lights a try.

Why should you buy LED holiday lights?

  •
    • They’re energy efficient - 0.08 watts per LED C7 multicolor bulb (compared with .48 watts for an incandescent minilight and 6 watts for a standard incandescent C7 bulb).
    • They have a long lifespan - up to 50,000 hours or more used outdoors, and twice as long indoors.
    • Safety - They’re cool to the touch and no chance of combustion.

LED lights are currently available in strings from 25 to 150 bulbs with red, green, blue, white, yellow and multi-colored bulbs.  They are also available in many styles including mini-ice, ball-shaped, etc.

The following graphic comparing the Energy cost of different holiday lighting options was obtained from www.energyideas.org.  Assumptions for the calculations are:

  • assuming an 8 foot tree lighted for 1 season (five hours per day for 30 days)
  • Fewer standard incandescent bulbs in the display, as they are much brighter than LED’s.
  • Wattages:
    • LED mini-ice 280 bulbs = 14 watts
    • LED C7 multicolor 300 bulbs = 24 watts
    • Incandescent premium (energy-saving) 300 mini-lights = 108 watts
    • Incandescent standard 300 mini-lights = 144 Watts
    • Incandescent C7 125 bulbs = 750 watts
  • Energy calculated at 13+ cents per kWh
